Information About Cross Country
Cross Country is a fall sport involving races on grass and hills. The Home School High School team debuted in fall of 2011 and Middle School team in the spring of 2012.
High School boys and girls both race 5k's (3.1 miles). Middle School athletes race 1 mile to 2 miles depending on the meet.
The Home School EAGLES compete in meets with public and private schools in the Wisconsin. The season ends with the exciting Home School XC Championship Meet currently with 8 home school teams and over 200 athletes competing. CHECK OUT this cool Video about our meet. There is also an optional Home School Nationals Meet in TN. In 2017 we had 21 athletes travel to TN to compete in 70 degree weather in November, and our HS girls team took 3rd place!
There are some optional IL races in October as well as USAT&F and Footlocker Regionals in late November for anyone interested in a higher level racing and one more month of training and racing in the cold. In 2017 we had over 20 athletes compete at the Footlocker Regionals in Kenosha, WI.
Practice officially starts mid August, but ALL team members are encouraged to run through the summer to stay in shape. Practices times start at 6PM until is gets too dark then we will move it to earlier time as needed. Practice locations rotate between Clinton, Beloit, and Janesville, we may move to other parks as coaches desires, check the Calendar for time and location.
You will need a good pair for training shoes for sure and then a lighter pair of racing flats and/or spikes if you intend to be more competitive. A pair of running/training shoes are used for running ONLY and last between 250 miles and 500 miles depending on several factors. As a general rule when your knees, ankles, or shins get achey it is time to replace them. Most running stores give a 10% team discount in you ask. Have your self properly fit at a running shoe store it WILL make a difference. Running stores don’t often carry youth sizes so you will have to just do your best at shopko or kohls. See the Running Warehouse Website for more shoe information and/or to purchase youth and adult shoes.
Keep in mind there are voluntary COACH positions that NEED to be filled by parents and others; Besides coaching we need meet photographers, practice helpers/timers, meet helpers/timers, snacks and drinks coordinator for meets, meet set up, banquet coordinator(s), fundraising, etc. Just step up and do it if you are available.
